Free Polymer Clay Tutorial Spring Greens for Colour Mixing Recipe

 

Well I was hoping this weekend to get in the garden but its wet and windy outside.  Luckily for you its given me the opportunity to prepare and write this update for my new free polymer clay colour mixing recipe.

New Polymer Clay Colour Mixing Tutorials for Spring

 

As I write its lovely and sunny outside, with a storm forecast for tomorrow! Well that Spring for you.

However its the perfect time to introduce our latest Polymer clay colour mixing tutorials with a Spring theme of course.

ALLIUM BLOOMS

Alliums have to be one of my favourite spring time flowers and I couldn't resist these soft purple shades.

 

 SPRING FLORALS

A fresh spring mixture is the focus of this polymer clay tutorial, mixing a deep purple and green with softer colours.

 PASTEL HUES

Pastels are for me always a reminder of Spring and Easter and this colour mix is perfect.

My first is a new Tube Statement Necklace, a first for me at Lottie of London which I enjoyed crafting.  With bold and bright colours in an abstract design my tube necklace has been strung onto a simple silver plated chain so as not to detract from the design. 

Two new designs of my Half Moon Statement Earrings, a firm favourite of mine so I couldn't resit making more.

To finish something a little different, a new style of stud earrings in an abstract shape.

Polymer Clay Colour Palette Tutorials

Commissions for jewellery aren't the only thing I get requests for here at Lottie Of London.  I often get requests for the colour recipes that I create especially for my designs.

I love colour mixing for both my customers to create something special for a unique commission or playing with colour mixes for inspiration on new designs.

 

 

So it made sense that as I have my recipes written down to turn these nuggets of infomation into PDF Tutorials for the polymer clay community.  My PDF tutorials are now available to purchase both from my website here but also in my Etsy store.

 

So whats so different about my colour palettes?  Polymer clay is available in a wide variety of colours but rather than have stacks of little or even large blocks of all these colours I decided a long time ago to learn how to make my own from only the Fimo True Professional Colours.

 

6 colours plus black and white are all that's needed to create my recipes and its a great way of learning colour theory.

You can of course use any brand of polymer clay to create these recipes, your colours will turn out different but that's the fun in colour mixing!

I'll be adding more of my personal recipes over the coming months but also create some new yummy recipes for your to try like our Candy Palette Tutorial.

Polymer Clay Water Cane

Earlier this week I took some time out to make this Water Cane, I purchased the tutorial for this cane from CraftArtEdu designed by Claire Wallis.

Its a fairly simple tutorial for those that have experience in caning involving skinner blends.

You get two tutorials for the price, the water cane and another thunderbolt cane which I have yet to try.

Here's what I made with my finished cane, I did have to stretch the cane a little when applying them to my pendants but I'm delighted with the effect.

I think this cane could look great in an array of colours I'm thinking maybe red next time.

Faux Rose Quartz Polymer Clay

Following on from my post on Faux Jade with polymer clay, I decided to have a go at Faux Rose Quartz.

I found this free tutorial online from Polymer Clay Central Faux Rose Quartz, a great tutorial but I altered it slightly here's what I done.

To start I took some translucent clay and added a very small amount of red, I mixed the colour well until evenly mixed.  I them decided much like the faux jade tutorial to take some cuts from my mix and added a few more specks of the red clay, I rolled this through but this time not a thoroughly allowing the mix to have some darker speck of pink showing through.

I then mixed my iridescent glitter though my full mixed rose quartz again until it was evenly mixed through.

Then again much like my faux jade tutorial I decided to chopped the two mixes up using my blade and them randomly combined the two together to allow of a variation in colour.

This was then rolled until combined, but not overly as I didn't want to colours to blend together and there you go a faux rose quartz polymer clay mix.

Now I have to add at this point personally I don't like the finished result of using the iridescent flakes and would omit these next time.

Polymer Clay Lava Beads Tutorial

Here's a simple tutorial for Polymer Clay Lava Beads, perfect if your new to polymer clay and finding your feet with new techniques.

Lava beads are created using polymer clay and sea/rock salt to create a wonderful effect all over the beads resembling lava.

To start all you need is some sea or rock salt, scrap clay and some clay in the chosen colour for your beads.

 Once you've created your beads using your scrap clay and outer colour layer (above), start applying the sea salt to your beads by either rolling and squishing the salt into your clay or applying the salt to the beads by hand, you will probably find that your beads will lose there desired shape as you apply the salt into the clay as seen below.

 Because I want my beads to be round I gently re-rolled them between my palms this helped to embed the sea salt deeper into the beads which creates a deeper effect, it also give you the opportunity to see if you want to apply more salt to any large gaps on the beads.

Once your happy with your beads its time to create your bead holes and cook them.  Once they are cooked and cooled simply place the beads into a glass of water and leave them to allow the sea salt to dissolve.

It does'nt take long for the salt to dissolve so dry your beads off and they will be ready to use, here's how mine turned out below.

This is quite a nice and simple technique which I plan to use for some future designs.

CraftArtEdu Review for Polymer Clay Tutorials Part 1

Following on from my mini post From the Craft Book to the PDF - Online Polymer Clay Tutorials this weekend, here's a review of a tutorial class I have tried with CraftArtEdu.com

I've had my eye on CraftArtEdu's polymer clay tutorials for a while but I've always found their higher prices slightly off putting, are they really value for money?

My initial thoughts had always been that for the price of the one online tutorial I could by a book full of tutorials, so where is the incentive to buy?  Well it would seem that quite a few of the artists that had initally published books are now have tutorials available on CraftArtEdu, so if like me you have a favourite artist or technique that you want to learn this is now the place to go.

A few weeks back they offered a free promotional download via email for the polymer clay tutorial Have a Heart by Donna Kato, with Donna being one of my favourite polymer clay artists it was an opportunity not to be missed.

So what do you get with a CraftArtEdu tutorial? Well initially when the website first started purchased classes where only available to view for a limited period of time, thankfully this has now changed and you are able to view the video classes an unlimited amount of times.  Classes will consist of a tutorial video and material list and its worth noting that some classes will also consist you will also get a PDF file of your class, though this can vary with each class, so be sure to check.

Have a Heart by Donna Kato Part 1

Upon purchase the email link for my class was sent quickly, which is perfect for all the crafter's out there, after all we are an impatient lot when it comes to wanting to learn new things.

This class was spilt in to 3 parts, an introduction which is usually free and a teaser to tempt you into purchasing the class and then 2 more sections Part 1 was for the assembly of the cane that will be used in Part 2 creating your jewellery piece. For this review I'll be focusing on part 1 of the cane assembly.

Now I thought that the class video would actually be them showing you how its done, as it done, pretty much like many tutorials on YouTube, but its not, its a video class of images showing you each part for which the tutor talks over explaining what to do and also includes written directions to.  How is this any different to a book tutorial? well the video class contains a lot more pictures than a book with more detail for the techniques used, for this particular tutorials cane construction it was great, I could move the player back and forth through sections I didn't understand to get it right and Donna's instructions where very clear to work with.  I actually watched the video first and then got all my materials together to go through the class again, I could stop and rewind as necessary and the class moved at a good working pace.

A plus for this method of tutorial was getting tips from the tutor on techniques to improve my work, which is invaluable, just like being in a real class with the tutor which is what CraftArtEdu is trying to do, make a online tutorial class for everyone to be able to access and not replace tutorial books.


Despite my love for book tutorials I was pleasantly surprised with the class I really enjoyed it and I'm delighted with my completed cane for part 1 and can't wait to grab some time to move onto part 2.

Would I buy again and pay the higher price? yes I would, I think like most crafter's if there's a technique or particular item you want to learn to make you will ultimately pay any price to learn it and CraftArtEdu classes are a very enjoyable way to do it.

From the Craft Book to the PDF - Online Polymer Clay Tutorials

It would seem that fiction books are not the only victims of modern technology, craftbooks are also now finding themselves digitalised into PDF's and on-line video content, so much so that very few polymer clay books are now be publishing, personally I find this a shame I love a good craft book for polymer clay and I can endlessy flick through the gorgeous pictures, I always refer to my books for information and when you have a passion for a craft you just can't beat a good book.

Of course not every crafter has the means to publish a book and modern technology has therefore opened up not only their world in being able to show there craft but also ours for being able to have a good old nose, this undoubtedly has to be the biggest advantage there is crafting in a digital era.


So what types of digital on-line crafts tutorials are available?

Blogs & Websites - Many bloggers love to post tutorials, tips and advice for there craft and if the blogger is still blogging, you can comment and/or ask any questions you may have.  The same can be said for websites with some tutorials now available from larger company websites such as Sculpey, fan based websites like Polymer Clay Central and magazine tutorials like Make Jewellery though occasionally some magazines will charge a fee for their tutorials.

 YouTube - Anyone can upload a video tutorial these days and YouTube has thousands simply search Polymer clay Tutorials to start,  of course quality will vary but you can find some great gems and new techniques.

Selling Platforms - Quite a few crafters have now made their tutorials available for purchase in downloadable PDF form, you can find these tutorials available on handmade websites such as Etsy or Folksy to name but a few, these are obviuosly avaiable to print off and keep at your own disposable.

Claylessons.com - Is a website dedicated to clayers, set up to provide a large variety of tutorials for sale from a variety of artists with assorted techniques and skill levels.  Tutorials vary in price and are available for download for you too keep, each tutorial also offers you the ability to ask the creator questions.

CraftArtEdu.com  - A very professional crafters website set up by Donna Kato to offer a unique online crafting experience.  Tutorials are available for a wide selection of crafts from jewellery, polymer clay, fine arts and more.  The classes are in video form and they are quite a bit more expensive than those mentioned above however as mentioned the classes are of a very high standard.
